Band of Brothers, Dick Winters, In his Own Words, Allen Theatre, Hershey Bed and Breakfast

The Hershey-Derry Township
Historical Society presents

In His Own Words

The Hershey-Derry Township Historical Society will commemorate the birthday and honor the service of Maj. Dick Winters with the screening of the documentary, "In His Own Words."
This rarely seen documentary chronicles the story behind the mini-series "Band of Brothers" and demonstrates examples of Winters' World War II leadership using selections of vignettes from the HBO miniseries.
The documentary be shown at the Allen Theatre in Annville on Tuesday, February 22 at 6:00 p.m.

Winters, who lived in Hershey, assumed command of Easy Company, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division, shortly after parachuting into France in the early morning hours of D-Day, June 6, 1944. Following D-Day, Easy Company fought across Europe, participating in Operation Market Garden, the Battle of the Bulge and eventually capturing Hitler's "Eagle's Nest" in Berchtesgaden, Germany.
Easy Company's story was made famous by the book "Band of Brothers" by Stephen E. Ambrose and later the miniseries.

About Allen Theatre, host to In His Own Words
Allen Theater, and MJ's Coffee Shop has become an institution/the place to be in Annville and regularly draws theatre goers from throughout the region, even larger cities with upscale movie theatres such as Camp Hill, Harrisburg, Gettysburg, and Reading.  The reason for the Allen Theatre's allure is the fact that the theatre's owners accomplished a world class restoration bringing back Art Deco elegance coupled with small town charm. Often, a movie will be proceeded by an organ concert or enlightened commentary on some facet of the movie by owner Skip Hicks.
The theatre presents much more than the "shopping center movie theatre" run of movies.  Allen Theatre embraces territory shunned by mall theatres by hosting live stage events as well as art films, foreign films and other cinema that appeal to multiple genre--films that would never be considered by run of the mill "shoe box" theatres. As a result, many movies shown in Annville are rare opportunities for theatre goers.  For example, the Allen will soon present a champagne breakfast and the classic 1953 black and white film, THE EARRINGS OF MADAME de….  This will be a rare opportunity to see the film in a movie theatre.
The appeal of the Allen Theatre in Annville is that the theatre's owners have figured out the proper mix to appeal to audiences. The theatre features first run, main line movies, and the blockbusters that come to the huge theatres open at the same time or sometimes even earlier at the Allen.  The Allen also has been known to hold over a movie, sometimes for weeks, if it has the right mettle.  To learn more about the Allen Theatre's exceptional audio system and three years of re-construction, please click here.

Gretna Music, Annville Inn, Hershey Bed and Breakfasts, Hershey Bed & Breakfasts

Gretna Music Presents IMANI WINDS

“Faith.” That’s what Imani means in Swahili. And it’s a most appropriate name for this youthful group that’s more than just a wind quintet, that’s dedicated to carving a unique path through the classical music world with genre-blurring, culturally inclusive concerts designed to bridge European, African, American and Hispanic traditions, and to inspire audiences of all ages and backgrounds.

No dry, rehashed run-through of old warhorses, a concert by Imani will expose even the most jaded among us to new works, and to fresh aspects of well-known masterpieces set in scintillating juxtaposition. One might even say (as NPR did) that the creativity and inspired artistry of Imani “rocks the house.”

But don’t take that on faith. Take in Imani Winds.

Gretna Music Presents Imani Winds at Eliabethtown College, Saturday, March 5, 2011 7:30 PM. For more information, click here.

And, when you come to Elizabethtown College, just outside of Hershey, to see Imani Winds, you will love your stay at our country estate B&B, only minutes from Hershey, Hollywood Casino, Lancaster, and more.  Annville Inn.

Gordon Lightfoot, Hershey Theatre, Hershey Bed and Breakfast

Gordon Lightfoot
At the Magnificent Hershey Theatre

March 25, 2011

DON'T MISS GORDON LIGHTFOOT

“The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down…” are lyrics from one of his most famous ballads, but they just as easily could be used to describe the phenomenal career of iconic singer-songwriter, Gordon Lightfoot. On Friday, March 25, 2011 Lightfoot will perform at the Hershey Theatre. Tickets for the Hershey Theatre performance go on-sale to the public on Friday, January 14, 2011 at 10 AM.

Born November 17, 1938 in Orillia, Ontario Gordon Lightfoot studied at Los Angeles’ Westlake College of Music. He returned to Canada in the early 1960s and began performing at the “Riverboat” during Toronto's fabled folk scene. In 1966, his debut album Lightfoot! was released. Tracks such as For Lovin' Me, Early Mornin' Rain, Steel Rail Blues and Ribbon of Darkness brought him international recognition as a songwriter. Cover versions of his songs were recorded by artists such as Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash and Elvis Presley, until 1971 when his own version of  If You Could Read My Mind became a Top Ten hit. In 1974, his classic single, Sundown, went to No.1 on the American charts, followed two years later by The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald, inspired by a Newsweek magazine article; it reached No. 2 on the U.S. Billboard charts. By the 1990s he was mostly touring, giving just fifty concerts a year by 1998, mainly in North America, while he released two albums in the period. In 2004, he released his 20th album Harmony, and appeared as a featured guest on Canadian Idol.

Lightfoot’s live performances never disappoint the legions of devoted fans who consistently pack concert halls for a chance to hear the beloved troubadour deliver the time-defying songs that have earned him an international reputation as one of the most anticipated live performers. During his illustrious career he has won 15 Juno Awards and been nominated for 5 Grammy Awards. He was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 1986 and the Canadian Country Music Hall Of Fame in 2001. In May 2003 was made a Companion of the Order of Canada and is also a member of the Order of Ontario, and in 2004 was inducted into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame.

Antique Automobile Club, Hershey PA, Bed and Breakfast Heshey

Antique Automobile Club of America Museum Hosts Rare 1922 Dixie Flyer Firefly Speedster

Out of 7,469 automobiles manufactured between 1917 and 1923, this is the only known survivor. Rest are lost to history!

When the automobile was in its infancy nearly every city and large town in America boasted at least one enterprise engaged in the manufacture of cars. Most of these companies and their vehicles are lost to history.

The Antique Automobile Club of America (AACA) Museum is presenting a survivor from this era that has travelled half way around the world to return to its home. On temporary exhibition is a 1922 Dixie Flyer Firefly Speedster, which was manufactured in Louisville, Kentucky, exported to Australia, saved from the junkyard, restored and finally purchased by Kentucky Trailer, the company that originally built the car! The Speedster will be on display at the museum until the spring of 2011.

Plan your trip to Hershey, and consider including the Antique Automobile Museum as one of your sites to visit. Rosalie, Your Innkeeper, Annville Inn Bed & Breakfast, can suggest any number of places to visit based upon your interests. She can also point you to locally owned and locally operated restaurants, shops and much more. Be sure to visit Annville Inn's Web site.
