In His Own Words

The Hershey-Derry Township Historical Society will commemorate the birthday and honor the service of Maj. Dick Winters with the screening of the documentary, "In His Own Words."

This rarely seen documentary chronicles the story behind the mini-series "Band of Brothers" and demonstrates examples of Winters' World War II leadership using selections of vignettes from the HBO miniseries.

The documentary be shown at the Allen Theatre in Annville on Tuesday, February 22 at 6:00 p.m.

Winters, who lived in Hershey, assumed command of Easy Company, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division, shortly after parachuting into France in the early morning hours of D-Day, June 6, 1944. Following D-Day, Easy Company fought across Europe, participating in Operation Market Garden, the Battle of the Bulge and eventually capturing Hitler's "Eagle's Nest" in Berchtesgaden, Germany.

Easy Company's story was made famous by the book "Band of Brothers" by Stephen E. Ambrose and later the miniseries.

Allen Theater, and MJ's Coffee Shop has become an institution/the place to be in Annville and regularly draws theatre goers from throughout the region, even larger cities with upscale movie theatres such as Camp Hill, Harrisburg, Gettysburg, and Reading. Lebanon Valley College’s (LVC) 32nd Annual Founders Day Convocation, scheduled for February 15, will recognize The Honorable Thomas W. Corbett Jr. ’71, Governor of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Also at Founders Day, a student group will be announced as the winner of The President’s Award for community service.

The convocation will begin at 11 a.m. in Miller Chapel and is open to the public. Lebanon Valley College’s (LVC) 32nd Annual Founders Day Convocation, scheduled for February 15, will recognize The Honorable Thomas W. Corbett Jr. ’71, Governor of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Also at Founders Day, a student group will be announced as the winner of The President’s Award for community service. The Founders Day award is one of the highest commendations issued by the College. The award recognizes an individual whose character and leadership, in the spirit of the founders of Lebanon Valley College, contributes to the enhancement of life in central Pennsylvania.

“T o have a graduate of Lebanon Valley College elected as Governor of one of our nation’s largest states is an impressive accomplishment and a very proud moment in the College’s more than 140 year history,” said Dr. Stephen MacDonald, LVC president. “Governor Corbett’s career as a U.S. attorney and as Pennsylvania attorney general is the embodiment of the ideals of a liberal arts institution and LVC’s mission of preparing our students for a life of service to others. The convocation will feature LVC student organists Dillon Streifender ’13, Lauren Anderson ’11, and Tyler Canonico ’14, a choir arrangement, and messages from MacDonald, LVC president; Dr. Michael Green, vice president for academic affairs and dean of the faculty; and Governor Corbett. Rev. Msgr. Vincent J. Smith, pastor emeritus of Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Camp Hill, will offer the invocation. Smith officiated the Corbett’s wedding.

THE FRENCH CULINARY INSTITUTE (FCI) in lower Manhattan is a very special place. Even more special for Sam and Gina, as they met there at the Institute, in 1990!

According to Gina, "At FCI we were trained under the headship of Jacques Pepin, the world renowned chef, who at the time was well connected with Julia Child and other top chefs of the region, all of whom supported the school and its mission."

The FCI regime is well known for its rigorous training schedule. Chefs study intensely for six hours a day, five days a week. The concentration is focused on developing cooking skills, with some "front of the house" training as well. After graduation from FCI, Sam and Gina's career included serving as head chefs at upscale New York restaurants, catering facilities and a bakery. Sam and Gina come to us from New Jersey; they have been frequent guests of Annville Inn over the years.

“The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down…” are lyrics from one of his most famous ballads, but they just as easily could be used to describe the phenomenal career of iconic singer-songwriter, Gordon Lightfoot. On Friday, March 25, 2011 Lightfoot will perform at the Hershey Theatre. Tickets for the Hershey Theatre performance go on-sale to the public on Friday, January 14, 2011 at 10 AM.

Born November 17, 1938 in Orillia, Ontario Gordon Lightfoot studied at Los Angeles’ Westlake College of Music. He returned to Canada in the early 1960s and began performing at the “Riverboat” during Toronto's fabled folk scene. In 1966, his debut album Lightfoot! was released. Tracks such as For Lovin' Me, Early Mornin' Rain, Steel Rail Blues and Ribbon of Darkness brought him international recognition as a songwriter. Cover versions of his songs were recorded by artists such as Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash and Elvis Presley, until 1971 when his own version of If You Could Read My Mind became a Top Ten hit. In 1974, his classic single, Sundown, went to No.1 on the American charts, followed two years later by The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald, inspired by a Newsweek magazine article; it reached No. 2 on the U.S. Billboard charts. By the 1990s he was mostly touring, giving just fifty concerts a year by 1998, mainly in North America, while he released two albums in the period. In 2004, he released his 20th album Harmony, and appeared as a featured guest on Canadian Idol.

Lightfoot’s live performances never disappoint the legions of devoted fans who consistently pack concert halls for a chance to hear the beloved troubadour deliver the time-defying songs that have earned him an international reputation as one of the most anticipated live performers. During his illustrious career he has won 15 Juno Awards and been nominated for 5 Grammy Awards. He was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 1986 and the Canadian Country Music Hall Of Fame in 2001. In May 2003 was made a Companion of the Order of Canada and is also a member of the Order of Ontario, and in 2004 was inducted into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame.

Antique Automobile Club of America Museum Hosts Rare 1922 Dixie Flyer Firefly Speedster

Out of 7,469 automobiles manufactured between 1917 and 1923, this is the only known survivor. Rest are lost to history!

When the automobile was in its infancy nearly every city and large town in America boasted at least one enterprise engaged in the manufacture of cars. Most of these companies and their vehicles are lost to history.

The Antique Automobile Club of America (AACA) Museum is presenting a survivor from this era that has travelled half way around the world to return to its home. On temporary exhibition is a 1922 Dixie Flyer Firefly Speedster, which was manufactured in Louisville, Kentucky, exported to Australia, saved from the junkyard, restored and finally purchased by Kentucky Trailer, the company that originally built the car! The Speedster will be on display at the museum until the spring of 2011.

The exhibition will include cars from all phases of Shelby’s career.

Beginning with their 2007 tour, their shows now include a psychedelic light show modeled after the light shows used by Pink Floyd during their 1987 an 1994 world tours. The show includes a round screen with " intelligent lights" arranged around the perimeter.

During each 2½ hour concert, movies and animations are displayed on the screen while lights and lasers turn the stage and auditorium into a swirling mass of color. Fans are permitted on the Hersheypark Entertainment Complex property beginning at 7 a.m. on Friday, June 11. Two hours prior to the on-sale, fans are directed in front of Giant Center Box Office, where they are issued a numbered wristband. Wristbands are available for one hour, and at the conclusion of that hour, a selected fan will randomly select a wristband that will determine the line order. For example: if 1,000 wristbands are issued during that hour and the number 500 is selected, the person wearing wristband 500 will be the first person in line. Numbers 501 to 1,000 will proceed in line behind, followed by numbers 1 through 499. Once the line is in place, everyone arriving after the wristbands were issued will be escorted to the end of the numbered line.

The Annville Inn Gardens Bloom Report

What's In Bloom at Annville Inn Gardens? This blog for Monday, June 7th is going to list the major plants in most of our gardens. To list every plant in every garden that is blooming would be expansive, so for each garden, we will list some of the highlights. When you stay at the Inn, you can explore the Gardens and discover the other plants that are also in bloom!

Swimming Pool Garden: This year's Swimming Pool Garden is focused on blueberries. The variety of berries shown in this photograph is: "Misty." The familiar faces, Pansies, are still in bloom, still bringing smiles. Our five tree roses in this area, red Knock Out Trees, are about to break into full bloom. The small yellow bloom shown is Rose Moss (Portulaca (Portulacaceae )), the color is "Taquila Yellow."

Koi Pond Garden: Pink Primrose are interplanted with pink Foxglove (digitalis) and pink Astilbe for a pleasing color coordination. Beyond is red Yarrow, which picks up the red highlights in the digitalis. Echinacea is poised to burst into full bloom in the next few weeks.

Welcome Garden:

This Garden of foundation plantings, perennials and a scattering of annuals (such as Snapdragon) is one of the first gardens our guests encounter. Currently blooming in this garden are large Petunia baskets, Pansy, Marigold, Ageratum, and a nice stand of Bee balm, (Monarda fistulosa {pink}) shown below:

Ashie's Garden: Earlier we had more than 1,000 stalks of iris in full bloom. Those have now all been cleared away to make room for a variety of Poppies, Fever Few and Larkspur, which currently "own" Ashie's Garden. They will eventually give way to a mass of day lilies. Day Lilies, like roses, need to be deadheaded daily, and Craig says there is no way he'll be able to keep up with the day lilies once they start!

Formal Rose Garden: Although most of our gardens contain roses, the majority of them, and the greatest variety, occur in the Formal Rose Garden. In this entry of our blog, we are showing a partial view of the main rose garden, plus individual photographs of Climbing Fourth of Fuly (red & white), Heaven Scent (white-pink), and Show Biz (red).

Train Garden: Our Train Garden, home to our G-scale outdoor railroad, is the last garden for us to "wake up" from the long winter, and we haven't yet begun work there. Our cactus plants will be taken out of winter quarters and placed in the Train Garden this weekend. Giant Elephant Ears are already planted and about to sprout. The train currently runs through Foam Flower, ferns and numerous other perennials. The most glamorous part: it runs through a tunnel of gorgeous Zepeirine Drouhin (OGR, "Old Garden Rose".)

Tapestry Garden: Bright Yellow yarrow (Achillea millefoliumis) in full bloom, and Blackberry Lily (Belamcanda chinensis) are perking up every-

where!

Butterfly Garden: One of Rosalie's favorite roses, Opening Night, appears in two locations, the False Indigo (Baptisia australis) Lilac have finished for the year (already!) and the deep rooted Primrose (Oenothera) graces the entrance statue to the garden.

Japanese Garden: Currently in between blooms, the Pieris (pieris japonica) looks nice, and a pleothera of pink Gladioli has shot up, reaching skyward.

Sign Garden: A beautiful red hybred tea rose, Love, is in full bloom, surrounded by red Knock Out roses, and bright red Salvia.

Mail Box Garden: Several Knock Out roses, contrasted by yellow arbovide, and large clemaits and Zebra ornamental grass makes an attractive place for the mailman to deposit mail!

Four C's Garden: This is where we grow Clematis, Cosmos, Cactus, and Canna (Tropicana.) Currently, only the Clematis is in bloom.

Calendar Garden: Something always in bloom throughout the spring, summer and fall calendar. Headlining in early June is Red Hot Poker, (Kniphofia uvaria) which will be followed by white and purple liatrus later on. Earlier, the long bed was a riot of color from many varieties of Iris.

Romance Garden: Caladium, two types of fern and hosta are the present stars of this garden. Earlier a large collection of Bleeding Heart (dicentra) had the spotlight. We are keeping a nice stand of dicanthus (carnation family) in bloom here, and have had good luck with Forget Me Nots (Myosotis).

South Garden: (left) This southern exposure garden features a variety of plants including "winter onions" that we prize for their interesting, curly tops. Soon, we will dig them up, re-plant the tops, and watch it grow all over again. Also blooming in this garden is Lamb's Ear (Stachys byzantina ), a garden favorite for generations.

Tractor Barn West & North Gardens: Minature roses and Red Hot Pokers are stealling the show right now.

The small Horse Shoe Garden (below) is a riot of pink and white shrub roses, which will soon give way to a collection of gladiolis.

Hidden Garden of the Orange Rose:

This secret garden features rocker chairs and a strange, orange rose that we cannot identify. It produces prolofic orange blooms and a great place to read a book and relax.

Hosta Garden contains over a dozen varieties of Hosta. In addition, we have other varities scattered throughout other gardens on the property.

Other gardens soon to be filled with blooms include the Pergola Garden, Potting Bench Garden, East Garden, the Sunken Garden, and the English Manor Garden.

This is one of our favorite trees, we have a matched set, with one on each side of our lane. Their shape is classic, and they are wonderful shade trees. (Sweet Gum )

Dave Matthews Band Comes to Hershey!

Formed in 1991 in Charlottesville, VA by South African vocalist/guitarist Dave Matthews, the Dave Matthews Band achieved worldwide stardom throughout the 1990's and 2000's.

Making a return engagement in our Hershey, the Dave Matthews Band will perform at Hersheypark Stadium July 9th at 7: p.m.

The Dave Matthews Band presented a more pop-oriented version of the Grateful Dead crossed with elements of jazz, funk, and the worldbeat explorations of Paul Simon and Sting. Matthews populated the group with several Virginia-based musicians -- bassist Stefan Lessard, saxophonist Leroi Moore, violinist Boyd Tinsley, drummer Carter Beauford, and short-lived keyboardist Peter Griesar -- and the band built up a strong word-of-mouth buzz by touring the country constantly, with special attention paid to college campuses.

Griesar left the lineup in March 1993, but the Dave Matthews Band moved ahead in his absence, releasing the independent album Remember Two Things later that year and issuing a live EP, Recently, in 1994. After fielding offers from major labels, the band signed with RCA and released the debut effort Under the Table and Dreaming in September 1994. By the following spring, the record had launched the hit single "What Would You Say" and sold over one million copies, thus setting the stage for an extremely successful career.

A signature event of Hershey Gardens is Biergarten, a celebration of a product of the earth! Come enjoy a selection of micro brews, live music, the outdoor glory that is Hershey Gardens, some 70,000 tulips, daffodils and other spring and summer flowering bulbs, the rarest of rare trees, and one of the country's most enjoyable Biergartens.

In Germany, beer was stored near rivers in underground cellars in order to keep the beer cool. Large shade trees were also planted to provide cooling shade. Eventually, gardens were set up under the trees with the singular purpose of providing a cool, relaxing venue for enjoying a mug of beer.

In keeping with that theme, Hershey Gardens celebrates the Biergartens of long ago with a spectacular outdoor setting that is verdant, pastoral, bucolic and at the same time filled with energy from the live music, the other people attending, and the excitement of going from booth to booth, sampling new brews.

But wait! There is more: Partici-pants will also be able to attend, at no extra charge, a special cooking with beer class "un-der the big top," with a well known area chef.

Campaign buys phone cards for solders!

NORWELL, Mass., April 4, 2010– More than 150,000 troops are serving overseas and are away from their families. Cell Phones for Soldiers, and Annville Inn Bed & Breakfast are calling on all Americans to support for these brave men and women by donating their unused cell phones. Cell Phones for Soldiers hopes to collect over 50,000 cell phones this year to help keep troops connected with their families. Cell Phones For Soldiers’ goal is every minute of every day a soldier can phone home.

“Over the past few years, we have been amazed by the generosity of others. But, we have also seen the need to support our troops continue.” says Brittany Bergquist, Cell Phones for Soldiers co-founder. “It is easy for Americans to make a small sacrifice of support by donating their unused cell phones, and providing families with a much-needed connection to their loved ones overseas.”

Annville Inn’s owner, Rosalie George, and her husband both come from military families, and currently have family members serving overseas in the U.S. Marine Corps. “We know how important it is for family members to stay in touch with their heroes overseas,” Rosalie says, “and we want to do our part to make these connections possible.”

The company that recycles the phones for eventual sales in order to raise cash to by phone cards for soldiers is ReCellular, founded in 1991. The company is dedicated to supporting charities and protecting the environment. Every 16 months, U.S. consumers are retiring an estimated 130 million cell phones and only 10 percent of those phones are being recycled. There are tons of phones in junk drawers across America, waiting to be collected and turned into calling card cash.

Annville Inn expects local residents as well as Inn guests to support the collection by donating cell phones for soldiers at: Annville Inn Bed & Breakfast, 4515 Hill Church Road, Annville, Pa. 17003. “We’re proud to show our support for U.S. soldiers, and to contribute to a worthy cause like Cell Phones for Soldiers,” says Mrs. George, Innkeeper.

Cell Phones for Soldiers was founded by teenagers Robbie and Brittany Bergquist from Norwell, Mass., with $21 of their own money. Since then, the registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization has raised almost $1 million in donations and distributed more than 500,000 prepaid calling cards to soldiers serving overseas.

“W e are continuously overwhelmed by the enthusiastic support of thousands of Americans who have helped our troops speak with their loved ones,” says the teens’ father, Bob Bergquist. “However, the need for support keeps growing as more soldiers are sent to the Middle East or are asked to serve extended tours of duty.”

Through increased fundraising efforts, the Bergquist family hopes to raise more than $9 million in the next five years to fund new programs, such as providing video phones and prepaid service to allow soldiers abroad to see their families on a regular basis.

Approximately half of the phones ReCellular processes are reconditioned and resold to wholesale companies in over 40 countries around the world. Phones and components that cannot be refurbished are dismantled and recycled to reclaim materials, including:

The Harrisburg-Hershey-Carlisle-York-Annville-Lebanon region is gaining a brand new Dinner Theatre, part of a much larger vision of Dr. Robert Barr's Agrarian Country complex planned for the Grantville region. THE NEW HERITAGE ARTS CENTER:

The Center will be Agrarian Country's first fully-operational educational center and will include a large multi-interest museum, 400-seat dinner theater and restaurant as well as facilities for educational programs in the arts, portraying our agricultural heritage, legacy, and culture. This facility will take approximately two years to complete. A short-term initiative under the Heritage Arts Center purview is the establishment of Agrarian Country’s Fishing Creek Playhouse and Dinner Theater.

Agrarian Country has leased a facility in northern York County off the Fishing reek Exit (Exit 36) along Interstate-83. This location will host the 2010 season beginning with Oklahoma!

Earlier this year, Fishing Creek Playhouse presented a special agricultural-related Broadway review at the 2010 Pennsylvania Farm Show. The show, "Broadway, Down on the Farm," was performed four times daily in the main exhibition building. Farm Show executives stated it was a huge hit and brought thousands of people to the show.

STARS Project

Congruent with the Agrarian Country's educational mandate, the organization has launched their youth educational program called, STARS. Targeted toward 3rd to 12th graders, STARS will focus on the performing arts.

Cornwall Iron Furnace Bed and Breakfast Hershey

Minutes from Annville Inn Bed & Breakfast is Cornwall, site of the nation's only surviving completely intact charcoal fueled iron making furnace. The historical buildings are a wonder of architecture, constructed of locally quarried brownstone. We are posting a few photographs to pique your interest.

The site is also the location of one of the nation's largest iron ore mining facilities, in operation until 1972 when the mines flooded and Bethlehem Steel shut down operations. Nearby is a housing area that makes one feel they have been transported to England. The original charcoal mill, mine, and other operations originated with a settler from England, and later transferred to the Coleman family, which built up vast fortunes. The Coleman empire included enormous mansions throughout our area, and into Lancaster, many churches constructed of brownstone, and railroads.

Our favorite Rails to Trails project is along a railroad bed once owned by the Coleman empire.

The Cornwall Iron Furnace, part of a National Historic Landmark District, is America’s most complete charcoal fueled iron making complex. According to Robert Vogel of the Smithsonian Institution, “With the exception of a mere handful of similar preservations in Sweden and Germany — and possibly a few in eastern Europe — I doubt that elsewhere in the world is there a 19th century iron furnace complex with the degree of historical integrity to be found at Cornwall…”

Cornwall Furnace is indeed a unique survivor of the early American iron industry. Originally built by Peter Grubb in 1742, the furnace underwent extensive renovations in 1856-57 under its subsequent owners, the Coleman family, and closed in 1883. It is this mid-19th century iron making complex which survives today.

At Cornwall, furnace, blast equipment, and related buildings still stand as they did over a century ago. Here visitors can explore the rambling Gothic Revival buildings where cannons, stoves, and pig iron were cast, and where men labored day and night to satisfy the furnace’s appetite for charcoal, limestone, and iron ore.

Cornwall Iron Furnace is part of a National Historic Landmark District by the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service. It has also been designated a National Historical Landmark by the American Society of Metals, and a National Historic Mechanical Engineering Landmark by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, citing Cornwall Furnace as “the only one of America’s hundreds of 19th century charcoal fueled blast furnaces to survive fully intact.”

There is a trail head marked by a giant "root beer barrel" the size of a one-room house, which serves as an info center. You pass right by it on the way to the Furnace. ALL SEASON: Great for cross country skiing.
Alden Place shops, located in the carriage house of one of America's grand mansions, built by famed "guilded age" architect Stanford White. The mansion is not open to the public, but the carriage house is. As of this writing, the Buzz Coffee shop is closed, but we hear a new one is moving in to take its place. Beautiful outdoor deck to enjoy an espresso before heading to the Rails to Trails project.

And with the cherry blossoms about to open, Washington is poised for today's {Saturday, March 27th} start of the National Cherry Blossom Festival, marking the 98th anniversary of the arrival of the trees from Japan .
On Thursday, the National Park Service hosted a festival preview on the shore of the Tidal Basin, where officials said that the two-week festival is the biggest recurring tourism event for the city and the National Park Service.

The peak bloom is expected to be April 1 through April 4, with the blooming period from March 28 through April 9. Of course, this is not 100% predictable, as Mother Nature is always a little "cagey" on such matters.

During the preview, officials of the U.S. Park Service, U.S. Park Police and the blossom festival were on hand to welcome visitors to the festival's various walks, talks, and other events. Berta Rojas Brings Artistry to Lebanon Valley College
March 8, 2010

Berta Rojas, a world-famous classical guitarist, is coming to Lebanon Valley College (LVC) on Saturday, March 20 at 7:30 p.m. Her performance, which is free and open to the public, will be in LVC’s Lutz Recital Hall of the Blair Music Center.

Known for moving easily from classical to other musical genres, Rojas has sold out performances at both the John F. Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., and the South Bank Centre in London. Originally from Paraguay, she has toured Europe and Asia, and also has appeared at Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center in New York.

Praised by The Washington Post as a “guitarist extraordinaire,” and by England’s Classical Guitar Magazine as “Ambassador of the Classical Guitar,” she has been recognized as a Fellow of the Americas by The Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Rojas holds a master's degree in music from Baltimore's Peabody Conservatory.

In 2004, she opened the International First Ladies Summit in Paraguay with special guest Hillary Rodham Clinton. Rojas is committed to supporting South American artists, and has served as the artistic director for several competitions, including the Cardozo Ocampo Competition in Paraguay, the Ibero-American Guitar Festival in Washington, D.C., and the John and Susie Beatty Competition. She is Paraguay's ambassador of tourism and a professor of guitar at George Washington University in Washington, D.C.

Look Back: Rock Musical Aida Just Closed at LVC

Fans of the theater have been enjoying a different style of acting in Lebanon Valley College's (LVC’s) Leedy Theater this February. Wig and Buckle, the theater company on campus, will present their spring musical Aida. Originally a Disney Theatrical Production, Aida was born from Elton John and Tim Rice, and ran on Broadway from 2000-2004.

Aida, known as a rock musical, is a vastly different style from what Wig and Buckle has done in the past. Just last season, the company was performing the Pirates of Penzance and Oklahoma the year prior.

“In the past we’ve done very classic style theater, and now we’re preparing a rock opera. It’s totally unlike anything Wig and Buckle has done before,” says director Sean Deffley. “Aida is Elton John, which is modern and consists of pop music, but it is refreshing to get something new.”

Typically members of the theater will turn to other performances done on Broadway or in other college theaters for ideas and understanding. However, Aida has been done by very few colleges. Because of this, Sean chose to make the production more historically accurate, focusing on the classical aspect and working to create what Egypt looked like at the time.

To make the musical a reality, it took a large crew of around 60 individuals. In addition to Deffley, his stage manager and acting crew, there were numerous behind the scenes personnel. The technical crew consisted of individuals working on sets, props, lighting, sound and costumes. All of these areas worked together throughout the process to make Aida a cohesive musical.
This year Wig and Buckle took a different approach to the costumes.

Typically the theater company rents costumes from a larger college or a company that deals with theatrical clothing, but this year the decision was made to create all of the costumes in house. With 26 individuals in the show and each one having approximately three different outfits, it was quite the process.

“Children of the Night” has become the name for the technical crew, as often long hours were needed to make the production a success. Individuals working on set design, props, etc., came in during the day to continue their work, but often were forced to wait until rehearsal was over at 10 p.m. each evening to get their various tasks done.

Junior Casey Edwards has led the tech crew since last year and admits that she never used a power tool before she began to help in the theater. As the leader, Casey begins the process of creating the sets and props by developing a blue print of each scene, giving a bird’s eye view of everything planned. She then meets with the director to gather input and continues to evolve her designs, striving to make it different from other productions. Then comes the building, painting, lighting and sound work for the weeks leading up to opening night.

“It can be stressful, but opening night makes it all worth it because you see all you were able to accomplish in a short period of time,” says Casey.

Time is a valuable commodity for the musical each year as the crew has 1-2 weeks less production time than the other plays throughout the year because of winter break. To help with this, Wig and Buckle members give up a week of their winter break and commit to coming back the week before classes begin to get a jump start on production. During that week, members work 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Despite having less time, the company is able to double their work that extra week with over 85 hours of effort put in.

“The musical is a titanic amount of work,” said Wig and Buckle advisor Dr. Pry. “Everyone is so willing to give their time considering the timeframe is so strict. The theater doesn’t have large areas to work and create pieces, so there’s a lot of tech work going on while rehearsal is taking place. The students work around classes and other schedules to make this all happen. It’s a scheduling challenge, but it teaches the students that time is the most precious commodity in the theater.”

Everything for the production is done by the students, from learning scenes to teaching choreography to constructing scenes, and so on. Numerous colleges require students to take part in the musical for credit, but that’s not the case at LVC. The students involved come from a variety of different majors. The company also does not recruit students or simply use all theater majors. They are all what Dr. Pry calls “walk ons.” With a long tradition of theater excellence, Dr. Pry says that it speaks to the talent of LVC’s student body. “It’s all on their own,” said Dr. Pry. “I may teach, guide, or model them, but they have to enforce the standards of excellence on one another.”

Sometimes you’ve got to go home to find yourself. That’s what the Goo Goo Dolls discovered when they began writing songs for Let Love In, the band’s eighth album in 2006. It meant loading up guitars and equipment in a U-Haul van and driving across country from Los Angeles to set shop in the home town Masonic Lodge to write and test songs, but it worked. In the "heading home" process founding members John Rzeznik and Robby Takac left Buffalo, N.Y. for Los Angeles, but Rzeznik soon found that L.A. isn't everything it's cracked up to be."I wasn't really feeling any kind of real inspiration in Los Angeles," he admits. "I was sitting here just beating my head against the wall trying to write songs and I wasn't feeling inspired at all."

Brooks & Dunn Bring Last Rodeo Tour to GIANT Center

Brooks & Dunn will bring their Last Rodeo tour to Giant Center on Thursday, June 17 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets go on sale Saturday, March 6 at 10:00 a.m.

Brooks & Dunn's memorable songs include Boot Scootin' Boogie, Red Dirt Road, My Maria and Play Something Country. Brooks & Dunn are an American country music duo, consisting of Kix Brooks and Ronnie Dunn. Both Brooks and Dunn had worked as singer-songwriters before the duo's formation, charting singles of their own in the late 1980s. They are the most successful duo from any genre, having sold more albums than all others in the Nielsen/SoundScan era.

The duo made its debut in 1991 with their first four singles all reaching the top of the U.S. Billboard country music charts. Josh Franklin Joins Cast
